Mechanically Minded

This isn't particulary funny or anything, but I just wanted to get it down in writing, so I wouldn't forget this stage of his life. Or maybe in 25 years when he's famous, we can all say, "yes, we could see that in you as child." ... or something like that!

Dominic is so mechanically minded. It's fun to sit back and watch him study how things work, how they fit together, where the proper pieces go, which direction to turn things in order for them to fit properly.

Right now, he's sitting in front of me waving his hands as he throws the basketball. He knows he's supposed to "wave" in order to dribble, but doesn't yet have control over the ball's direction. Yet each time it rolls away, he crawls after it to try again.

The refrigerator magnets with letters that fit the proper "hole" -- they were Amara's toy, but Dominic loves them. He fit the piece in without hardly trying.

Now he's done with the basketball, and he's found an unhooked USB cord that he's trying to fit into the external hard drive. Hmm... better not let him continue with that experiment if I value my files!

We have a gas fireplace (with the gas line not turned on/attached). There's a "key" and a "keyhole" on the floor. We have no idea how to use it, but it's there. Dominic loves to take the key in and out of the hole. He's been able to do that for probably 6 months. It's not a big hole, either, so that speaks of his strong hand/eye coordination.

The shape sorter toys he shows surprising patience and ability for. He calmly continues to turn the star until the points align and it drops in the bucket.

Each achievement, of course, is followed by a round of applause... for himself!

One of his favorite "toys" is probably a simple pencil and paper. He loves the cause and effect of writing and producing something from it. It will be interesting to see if this mechanical, cause/effect tendency continues as he grows older.
