As a life-long Cubs fan, it's amazing that Jon had never been to Wrigley Field for a game... until this weekend! For Father's Day, I gave him a trip to Chicago and the Cubs game. We decided last minute that this weekend was it, so we had to scalp tickets (and pay through the nose, since it was a sold-out game). We had bleacher seats -- in some ways a blessing, in other ways not so much. The Pros: The bleacher seats allowed Amara more room to move. She could stand, sit, or walk without being restricted by the individual seats. The atmosphere is what Cubs legend is made of -- it's such a neighborhood, "All American" feel. And it was easy to pass the kids back and forth when they got antsy.
The Cons: There were no backrests -- makes it hard to get comfortable for us to get the kids to sleep (thus, they didn't sleep). There was absolutly no hope of shade. The sun beat down on us all day. It was only 75-80 degrees with a slight breeze -- couldn't be a more perfect baseball day. But that temp, direct sun, with kids on your lap = hot!!! Thankfully none of us got burnt. Good ol' 50spf sunscreen!
Our goal is to hit all of the major league ball parks as a family. This was park number one. I'm sure as the kids get older, they'll enjoy it more (at least I hope they will!) Nap times will eventually fall by the wayside, and that will certainly help! Everytime we clapped, Dominic would get excited and clap as well. Amara, on the other hand, would turn to us and ask, "Is the game done now?" or "Now we go home?" She was happy with her Mr. Potato Cub (a Mr. Potato Head with Cubs gear on) for about an inning, and the hot dog took her a little bit of time to eat. But she was pretty much ready to go home by the third inning.
All in all, the kids were very good, all things considered. A babysitter would have probably been a good idea (if we knew anyone in Chicago), but then we wouldn't have had our first family baseball game together!
