We took the kids to the local egg hunt on Saturday. I think that will be a tradition we do at home in the future -- there were more kids than eggs! You know when you show up and hear Dad's telling their kids, "OK, here's the strategy..." that there will be some disappointed kids there.
That said, I'm SO proud of my kids.
They said, "Go!" but only half the kids heard it. The hunt was for kids 5 and under, but there were some who definitely were older. Following the very fast hunt, you heard lots of cries from disappointed kids who didn't get many eggs.
Amara and Dominic had ONE egg each.
Yet they were content. They were proudly showing it to us and asking if they could eat it. Amara did start to notice how full some of the other baskets were. She commented, "Hmm... I didn't get very many eggs." But she didn't cry.
We headed inside to see the Easter Bunny (Dominic's highlight of the day!) The big kids egg hunt was getting ready to start. Since they only had one egg from the previous hunt, we let them join in the bigger kids hunt -- knowing full well they'd likely not fare much better. The guy on the speaker told people they could only have 5 eggs each, and told people to share their eggs with kids who didn't have as many. Amara and Dominic each got 3 eggs (what we told them they could get).
It was very disappointing to see so many people proudly carrying their overfull baskets -- not the kids, mind you, but the parents. We sat at the picnic table and let the kids eat their 3 eggs -- not ONE person passed us and offered to share. Not surprising, but disappointing, nonetheless.
As Amara opened her 3 eggs, she started with the first -- a Heath. I said, "Oooh, yummy, that's Mommy's favorite!" Without hesitation, Amara handed it to me and said, "Here Mommy." She opened her 2nd egg, a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. Jon laughed and said, "That just happens to be Daddy's favorite. Again, without hesitation, she offered her treat. She opened her 3rd egg -- EMPTY! We felt SO terrible. Only then did she hover near tears. That sweet girl -- giving so unselfishly, is left without.
I hugged her and thanked her again for being so good at sharing, and promised her Twizzlers in the car, because she was so giving. I also promised that she and Dominic could have our own Easter Egg hunt -- without all the other kids -- in the yard after their nap. It was supposed to be Sunday, not Saturday.
That worked -- happy kids again. But from now on, we're Egg Hunting at home.

Your kids are SOOO cute and this just shows it is on the inside and out! What good parents they must have....
That is so sad about the empty egg... but so awesome about the sharing!! We too avoid the local egg hunt like the plague. Hershey supplies THOUSANDS upon thousands of eggs... it's insanity!! Who needs the hassle?! We hunt at home... and all is well, as each kid gets 27 eggs :D
You have such sweet kids :) I don't get the parents would be so proud that their kids had so many eggs or that they'd let kids over the age limit do the hunt.
